Chlorpropham, also known as **Chlorpropham**, is an organic compound with the chemical formula **C10H12ClNO2**. It appears as a light brown crystalline powder and is insoluble in water. It serves as a plant growth regulator and herbicide, primarily used to inhibit sprouting during the storage of potatoes, extending the storage period and maintaining product quality. Additionally, Chlorpropham effectively controls annual grass weeds and some broadleaf weeds, making it suitable for various crops such as wheat, corn, alfalfa, sunflower, sugar beet, and rice.
Chemical Properties
Melting Point: 41°C
Boiling Point: 247°C
Density: 1.18 g/cm³
Flash Point: 170°C
Chlorpropham is insoluble in water but can be mixed with alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons, and most organic solvents. It is stable below 100°C but can slowly hydrolyze in acidic or basic media.
Applications
Plant Growth Regulator: Chlorpropham effectively inhibits sprouting during the storage of crops like potatoes, extending the storage period and maintaining product quality. It is typically applied at least 15 days after potato harvest, allowing any damage to heal before evenly scattering the sprout inhibitor over the potatoes. The covering material is removed after 2 to 4 days.
Herbicide: As a highly selective pre-emergence and early post-emergence herbicide, Chlorpropham effectively controls annual grass weeds and some broadleaf weeds, making it suitable for a range of crops, including wheat, corn, alfalfa, sunflower, sugar beet, and rice.
