Atrazine is a selective systemic conductive pre-emergence soil treatment herbicide that can also be used as a post-emergence stem and leaf treatment. It is mainly absorbed by plant roots and conducted upwards, inhibiting plant photosynthesis and leading to plant death. Atrazine has a broad herbicidal spectrum and can control a wide range of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds.
Mesotrione is a broad-spectrum selective herbicide that can inhibit 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) both pre-emergence and post-emergence. It is effective in controlling major broadleaf and some grassy weeds.
Nicosulfuron is a systemic herbicide that can be absorbed by the stems, leaves, and roots of weeds. It is then translocated within the plant, causing sensitive plants to experience growth stagnation, chlorosis, and gradual death. Under normal conditions, this process takes about 20 to 25 days, but in cooler temperatures, certain perennial weeds may require a longer time to die. The herbicide is most effective when applied before the four-leaf stage; its efficacy decreases when applied to larger seedlings. This product also has pre-emergence herbicidal activity, although it is less active than its post-emergence effects.
Features of Nicosulfuron
Corn Field Weed Control: Mesotrione inhibits the enzyme acetolactate synthase in plants, disrupting amino acid metabolism, which leads to whitening and death of the plants. It is mainly used for pre-emergent or post-emergent control of annual broadleaf weeds and some grass weeds in corn fields, such as burdock, trifoliate pigweed, hemp dogbane, lambsquarters, amaranth, and smartweed.
Sugarcane Field Weed Control: In sugarcane fields, mesotrione is used in combination with cyanazine and ametryn to effectively control grass weeds such as crabgrass, foxtail, and Bermuda grass, as well as broadleaf weeds like hemp dogbane and burdock. It also has some suppressive effects on perennial troublesome weeds such as cyperus.
Rice Field Weed Control: Mesotrione is also applied in rice paddies, where it is used in combination with pretilachlor to effectively control barnyard grass and some annual broadleaf weeds and sedges.
Lawn Maintenance: In lawn care, mesotrione is used to control other weeds in Kentucky bluegrass lawns, such as creeping jenny and lambsquarters.
Application of Nicosulfuron
The best time to use Nicosulfuron:
(1) Ordinary Nicosulfuron without a safener:
It is advisable not to use it when corn is below the 2 leaf stage or above the 6 leaf stage, as it is sensitive and prone to phytotoxicity. If it must be used at more than 6 leaves, it should be applied as a directed spray to avoid contacting the growing point and causing damage.
(2) Nicosulfuronwith a safener:
Compared to ordinary Nicosulfuron, this formulation is relatively safer and can be used after the 5 leaf stage. However, the effectiveness of weed control decreases as the application is delayed, so it is recommended to use it during the 3-5 leaf stage.
