Sulfentrazone, also known as sulfonylurea herbicide, is a triazolinone-type herbicide primarily used in sugarcane fields to control annual weeds such as Digitaria sanguinalis (crabgrass), Amaranthus retroflexus (redroot pigweed), Echinochloa crus-galli (barnyardgrass), Cynodon dactylon (bermudagrass), Taraxacum officinale (dandelion), Cyperus esculentus (yellow nutsedge), Bidens pilosa (beggar's-ticks), Ipomoea purpurea (common morning glory), Chenopodium album (lamb's quarters), Perilla frutescens (shiso), Datura stramonium (jimsonweed), Setaria viridis (green foxtail), Xanthium strumarium (cocklebur), and other broadleaf weeds.
As a selective herbicide, it is absorbed by the roots or leaves of the weeds, inhibiting protoporphyrin oxidase in the chlorophyll biosynthesis pathway, leading to cell membrane disruption. This causes the leaves to rapidly desiccate and die, thereby alleviating or reducing weed pressure on sugarcane and consequently increasing its yield.
